Are Chelsea making the same mistake they did last summer?
Just 11 days have passed when the blue colour of Chelsea was raised aloft with the FA Cup trophy at Wembley with fans and players jubilating and thinking it can't get any wrong from here. Though it has been a bad season but at least there was something to cheer about at the end and a lot to look forward to next season.
But if you are looking for a club with a lot of uncertainty at the moment, then don't look further than Chelsea right now. The future of their manager Antonio Conte is still up in the air and there has been some unending discussions with Maurizio Sarri and his entourage for the past couple of weeks.
We are only a few days till June where it is believed to be the month to prepare for the next season but this time around the FIFA world cup in Russia will be taking centre stage, and clubs may find it difficult to get new players while the competition is on.
But it seems like those in charge at Stamford bridge doesn't really care about this as rightly stated in this tweet below.
Take a look at @HazardEdition's Tweet: https://twitter.com/HazardEdition/status/1001192854558007297?s=09
The likes of PSG, Napoli, West Ham and even Arsenal have parted with their former managers and appointed new ones with preparations for next season underway at those clubs but Chelsea are stuck in the middle still looking for ways to sack their manager and still debating on the amount to be paid to buy out Sarri from his release clause.
Everyone has almost proclaimed Sarri as the next Chelsea manager except for Chelsea themselves. His ex-player Lorenzo Insigne was quoted yesterday
He said - "If I sit on the Chelsea bench, I will be happy because he did well with Napoli & our football was appreciated by everyone"
Guardiola also said He will be happy to see him move to England
”He’s one of the best around, competing against him in the Premier League would be a pleasure”
Without a new manager in place it will be difficult to purchase new players as they would want to know the manager they will be playing for.
If you also look at the previous Chelsea recruitment it has been ridiculous to say the least, with little of them making impressions in the blue colour.
Chelsea's last 25 signings :
Pato, Pedro, Amelia, Baba Rahman, Begovic, Kenedy, Falcao, Hector, Miazga, Nathan, Djiloboji, Pantic, Cuadrado, Kante, Luiz, Alonso, Batshuayi, Eduardo, Caballero, Bakayoko, Zappacosta, Drinkwater, Rudiger, Morata, Barkely, Emerson, Giroud. It was reported yesterday that Roman Abramovich has emigrated to Israel which means He is moving further and further away from Stamford bridge and that doesn't help the situation at Chelsea at the moment especially now that there is no technical director to help Marina Granovskia with her job.
This year's Champions league finalist Liverpool have already put the final disappointment behind them and have concluded the deal to sign Fabinho from Monaco, add that with Naby Keita who will join up with them this summer and they're also deep in negotiations with Lyon for Nabir Fekir.
This is a team that had a relative success this concluded season as they secured a top 4 finish and reached the Champions league final and also boasts players like Mo Salah, Sadio Mane and Firminho in their ranks.
This is the kind of footstep Chelsea should be following if they're to avoid finishing outside the top 4 once again. Man city are getting stronger year after year and I don't expect them to finish anywhere outside the top 4 next season, Man Utd and Jose Mourinho are also in the mix as well as the "Harry Kane team". Arsenal should also be a force to reckon with next season with a new manager in place and boasting players like Lacazette, Aubameyang, Ozil, Mkhtaryan in their ranks.
This shows that the battle to finish in the top 4 next season will be as tough as it has ever been and Chelsea need to stop being left behind by their rivals. This is a club that has always been a pace setter over the years but they are the opposite at the moment.
It is not all doom and gloom for the blues, if they're to get Maurizio Sarri as their new manager, He is a man who is demanding and is well known for his beautiful football. But Chelsea need to announce him officially as soon as possible so that He can start his job and prepare well for the season ahead, which will also be his first outside his home country Italy.
